The 10 Most Dangerous Intersections in Macomb County

We ranked intersections by total police-reported crashes from 2021 through 2025. The state records one crash under the two roads in the order the officer listed them, so we combined both directions (for example, "Hall Rd at Hayes Rd" and "Hayes Rd at Hall Rd") into a single intersection.

Crashes from 2021 through 2025 coded to each intersection in the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Dashboard, data pulled November 6, 2026. Ramps, crossovers and locations where a road is listed at itself are not included.

What stands out: The Van Dyke roundabout at 18 1/2 Mile Road has a high crash count but few injuries (23 people hurt in 255 crashes), because roundabouts slow traffic and crashes there are usually less severe. Groesbeck Highway and 15 Mile Road had fewer crashes but two deaths, the most of any intersection in the top 10.

Rounding out the top 15: Hall Road and Schoenherr Road (178 crashes), 12 Mile Road and Mound Road (176), Groesbeck Highway and Utica Road in Fraser (176), Hall Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Utica (174), and Gratiot Avenue and 11 Mile Road in Roseville (174).

Why Crashes Happen

Police record the type of collision and the circumstances on every UD-10 crash report. Across the 110,251 Macomb County crashes from 2021 through 2025:

  • Rear-end crashes were the most common type: 35,320, or 32%. Sideswipes (21,215) and angle crashes (20,706) were next.
  • Intersections were involved in 36,196 crashes, or 33%. Red-light running was flagged in 3,547.
  • Hit-and-run drivers were involved in 15,457 crashes, or 14%.
  • Distracted driving was flagged in 7,636 crashes. The true number is likely higher, because distraction is hard for police to confirm after a crash.
  • Commercial vehicles such as semi trucks and buses were involved in 6,336 crashes.
  • Deer were involved in 3,423 crashes.

If You Are Hurt in a Macomb County Crash

Michigan's no-fault system changes how injury claims work. Your own auto insurance pays your medical bills and lost wages through personal injury protection (PIP), no matter who caused the crash. You can also bring a claim against the at-fault driver for pain and suffering if your injuries meet Michigan's serious impairment threshold.

  • Get the crash report. Police file a UD-10 report for every reportable crash. It records the location, the vehicles and the officer's notes on what happened.
  • Give your insurer written notice of a PIP claim within one year of the crash, or you can lose those benefits.
  • Hit-and-run crashes are still covered. Your own PIP coverage applies, and uninsured motorist coverage may apply if you bought it.
  • You generally have three years to file a lawsuit against the at-fault driver.

Methodology and Sources

County totals for 2021 through 2025, intersection rankings, corridor totals, community totals, crash types and crash attributes come from the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Dashboard, filtered to Macomb County traffic crashes for crash years 2021 through 2025. We pulled the data on November 6, 2026. The dashboard is updated nightly, so totals may differ slightly from the annual reports.

Intersection totals combine all records for the same pair of roads, in either order and across city lines. Corridor totals count crashes coded to any of the road's official names. Hall Road includes "Hall Rd," "M 59" and "20 Mile." Gratiot includes "Gratiot Ave," "M 3" and "State Highway 3." I-94 includes "I 94" and "Ford" (the Edsel Ford Freeway). The 2020 to 2024 trend and the 2024 details come from the 2024 Michigan Traffic Crash Facts Macomb County profile. The 2025 county totals come from the Michigan State Police 2025 County Crash Report.
